Pictures Of Romania

I have recently discovered a new website called ‘Pictures of Romania‘. It gives an insight into family life and culture in Romania, with a nice personal touch.

A notable feature is the ‘request a picture’ page.

    Is it a satirical site?

I don’t think so Mikey but perhaps.

“I have discovered that the only way one can really understand and appreciate Romania is to travel, eat and sleep with Romanians” is one of my favourite quotes.

Anyway I see your point ;) I think it’s more aimed at school kids as the site owner is a teacher.

“In Romania people here are keen to show you how to live a fun filled life, which combines hard work, with lots of warmth and love.”

This was the part that made me suspicious. :)

It would also be interesting to know if the language software it recommends is any good, or if the whole site is a cleverly disguised affiliate advert.

I didn’t notice that to be honest. It does read a bit like an advert, yu’re right. I suspect at least he gets a little advertising revenue from his ‘advertorial’. On another page he says he’s been there for seven years yet can’t speak Romanian. Not sure about you, but I was able to pretty much handle any situation I wanted in Romanian after about 3 years here. I guess when your partner is a local it’s just too easy to get lazy and leave it to her/him to handle everything for you.

Understanding people and learning to read can come quickly, even jsut self-teaching using a book. Speaking is the hardest thing. If you are forced to speak Romanian everyday i’d say you can become near fluent in a couple of years, but since so many people speak English, and like you said if your partner is local, then obviously it’s harder to get the practice.

I have only been here a few months ( + ten or so visits in the last 2 years ) so I can’t really say how long it should or shouldn’t take. I can understand a lot when reading, the gist when listening to people, but i struggle and am slow when trying to say anything other than a basic phrase.

As long as you don’t mind throwing yourself into it, Romanian isn’t such a hard language to learn – probably one of the easier ones. The case endings are difficult, and I think this puts a lot of people off. A lot of the books just try to get you to learn the case endings for the nouns throgh lists and it’s a demoralising and endless tasks. It’s far better to just pick them up as you go along. Even most Romanians make mistakes with them, and you’ll rarely make a mistake which leads to failed communication.

I know what you mean about people switching to English and not letting you practice. In the end I would just tell shop assistants, waiters, clerks, etc. that I was Latvian and didn’t speak a word of English! :D
